About For The Love of Bohus Stickning

"For The Love of Bohus Stickning" is a 2 day workshop located in the beautiful and scenic Columbia River Gorge in historic Hood River, OR. The workshops will be held in the Riverview Room at the Best Western Hood River Inn. This location overlooks the magnificent Columbia River!

About the Workshop

 

Overview:
Come learn about the history and legacy of Bohus Stickning from Susanna Hansson, while creating your own Bohus Stickning wrist warmers. With Susanna's expert instruction you will learn the techniques used to create this most beautiful of color knitting, which incorporates the use of color and purl stitches on the right side of the fabric.

The workshop will also include a slide presentation and discussion of the Bohus Stickning Industry, its origins, development, and eventual demise 30 years after it began. There is also an opportunity to examine, up close, several pieces from Susanna's collection of vintage museum quality garments.

Participants should be intermediate/advanced knitters or adventerous beginners with patience for working with fine yarns on small needles. The techniques used are not terribly difficult, but the use of color and purl stitches on the right side of the fabric can make Bohus challenging. Working on the wristlet will help you come to understand and see how the patterns are built and how the colors come alive.

All the materials for the workshop are provided, except for the assortment of needles you will need and includes a kit for a pair of wrist warmers. The kit contains specially imported, hand dyed yarn from Sweden as well as written instructions and a color chart. The yarns are the same as those used in the Swedish Bohus museum kits.

Schedule:
We arrive at 8:00 am on Saturday, Oct 2nd for registration. You will pick up your swag bags and name tags and have time to get ready for the first session. At 8:30 am we will dive right in!

After the morning session, there will be a 2 hour break for lunch, so you will have plenty of time to grab a bite to eat and walk around Historic Downtown Hood River. At 1:30 pm, come back for the afternoon session. We will finish up at 4:30 pm, which will give you time to take a little break.

Come and join us from 5:30-7:00 pm at Knot Another Hat, where everything hip & knitworthy is at your fingertips during a wine reception and private shopping event for workshop attendees only. After the reception, head downstairs to the acclaimed Celilo restaurant for an optional dinner of fresh, seasonal food prepared by Celilo's award winning chefs (see registration form for details).

On Sunday, we will be back at the Riverview Room at 8:30 am and ready to continue learning the Bohus techniques and history. We will break for lunch again from 11:30 to 1:30 pm. In the afternoon session we will conclude our knitting and have time to chat with Susanna, finishing up at 4:30pm.

Instructor:
Susanna Hansson grew up in Sweden in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s, where she learned to knit in the fifth grade. She reconnected with knitting in the 1980's and has been continuing her education in knitting by attending as many retreats and conferences as possible.

Susanna teaches locally in her hometown of Seattle, but is also well known for her workshops at regional retreats and national conventions. She is a regular at all 3 Stitches events and the Madrona Fiber Arts Retreat in Tacoma, Wa. Susanna has built a reputation as an instructor attentive to student learning and sensitive to student needs. Susanna takes great care in presenting her material in ways that will make it easy to understand.

 

Rates & Registration

purlaway™ is pleased to offer an early-bird special rate of $290 if you register by May 15th, 2010. Registration requires payment in full by May 15th, 2010.

Registration after May 15, 2010 will be $325.

Registation for The Love of Bohus Stickning includes 12 hours of knitting instruction, all required materials and written workshop materials, except for the range of needles needed, drinks and snacks throughout the day and a great swag bag of goodies for you to take home.

Your Registration is refundable up to 45 days before the event. There is no refund for cancellations within the 45 days of the event.

Space is limited for this event and will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. All participants are required to fill out a Registration Form. Registrations are not confirmed until payment is received.

If you are coming from out of town, purlaway™ has a block of rooms set aside just for our group for both Friday, Oct 1st and Saturday Oct 2nd at the Best Western Hood River Inn. The room rate is $89-109, depending on your choice of room, plus taxes.
